Hiking Black Mountain, San Diego, California

Trail Description

Length:  4.1 miles round trip
Elevation gain: 700 ft
Difficulty Assessment: Moderate
Trail Type: Out and Back

The Hike

This week we hiked Black Mountain. The trail entrance is not too far if you live near UCSD and is about half a hour drive north east. Like Cowles Mountain, this is more of a casual trail, located near a neighborhood, and is also quite short. The hike can be easily completed within 30 minutes. Although I would have enjoyed a longer hike, all in all I had a good time.

The address to the trail head is:

12115 Black Mountain Rd # A
San Diego, CA 92129-3600

On a side note; I think getting up early for a hike is as much part of the experience as the hike itself. It adds to the sense of accomplishment at the end of the hike.

The Hike

Today I hiked Cowles Mountain in San Diego. The trail was pretty crowded when we started (around 8am) and only continued to get more crowded as the day continued. I think this was because of how local the trail was compared to others that typically take at least an hour to get to.

The trail itself is not difficult at all. It is at an incline the entire way but very short. Hiking up to the summit probably only takes 30 minutes. If you want to extend your hike and make your trip worthwhile (in my opinion), continue down the other side of the mountain and then back track. It does seem counter productive but the trail down the other side is much nicer then the main entrance trail and only after hiking down and then back up and then back down does this seem like a real hike.

All in all, Cowles mountain was fun but it's more of a casual hike than it is a challenging hike which was what I was hoping for.
